Day trip to Anstruther

We took a day trip one Saturday to the coastal town of Anstruther. Just a short drive from us, Anstruther is one of the villages that makes up the East Neuk (pronounced 'nook') along with Crail, Pittenweem, and a few other towns.  Fishing has been a big part of the culture of the town and remains so in many ways today.

The town was beautiful, with a little marina right off of the heart of town.

While we were walking around we noticed a little monument to Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), who was born in Anstruther.  Chalmers was a well-known pastor in Scotland and came to St Andrews as a professor of theology, and the school nearly doubled in size due to his popularity among students in the country.  When we moved we discovered our house has a great little book, The Saint Andrews Seven, about his impact in the lives of a few students who went on to do great work in education in India.

One thing that puts Anstruther on the map is the Anstruther Fish and Chips Bar and Restaurant, which is reportedly home to the "Best Fish and Chips in the UK."  We thought we'd see for ourselves and we weren't disappointed. Fish and chips is basically the equivalent to burgers and fries or pizza over here (Joseph's school serves it every Friday for lunch), and Joseph and James have been happy to take in this part of Scottish culture!

Loving their fish and chips!

After we finished our meal and had explored the town, we headed to the local park so that the boys could run off some energy.  Back in Mississippi, an overcast day like this would have kept us indoors.  But since arriving to Scotland, our standards have changed... and the boys don't mind a bit.  And the Scottish parks make it easy - there is a great park in every town with something new to try out.

Bashful James :)
