Day 4: Oxford (part 2)

On Tuesday, we headed back to Oxford to spend a little more time in this beautiful city. We started the day off seeing Josh Hordern, a friend of Joey's from his time at the Trinity Forum Academy, and getting to meet his wife Claire. We chatted over tea and juice for the boys before heading out for the day. We spent most of the morning roaming around Oxford taking in the sights before meeting up with Josh for some college tours.

We met Josh for lunch at Harris Manchester College and he showed us around the campus. Afterwards, we headed towards New College, where he attended while studying at Oxford. It's called New College because it was the newest college in Oxford when it was founded - that was in 1379!

The Cloister

Each chapel we visited was stunning in its own way, but we loved this chapel for its high ceilings and the beautiful reredos carving of different biblical and historical figures.

In the afternoon we went our own way to Magdalen College.  Bordering the River Cherwell, it had beautiful buildings and grounds.

Magdalen was where C.S. Lewis taught (or 'tutored') during his time in Oxford.  Professors were required to stay at the college during term time, and it was on the Magdalen College grounds that an important event happened in his journey toward Christian faith.  During an evening stroll on Addison's Walk (which is on Magdalen's grounds), Lewis had an important conversation with his friends J.R.R. Tolkien and Hugo Dyson which was one of the final steps in his intellectual conversion.  It was a beautiful day for the walk.

After Magdalen College, we headed back towards town along a walk that is likely one that C.S. Lewis took often on his way to The Eagle and Child. Many people point to various lampposts around Oxford as the inspiration for the lamppost in The Chronicles of Narnia. We decided this lamppost was "the one" and took a picture before heading on our way.

After a full day in Oxford, we went to the Horderns' house for a beautiful evening of fun in the garden and a shared meal together. The boys loved showing off their swords and running off some energy.
